Purchasing Resources

It’s the time of year when everyone is ordering resources. Here are a few critical things for you to know.

1.  RESOURCE ACCOUNTS
If you want to see how much money is available for your child, go to Encom, find your child’s name and then click on “Additional Resources”. Here you will find your balance. This is also the place to find your child’s PO#. Sometimes it takes a little time for purchases to appear.

2.  NO CHEQUES
HCOS is not allowed to write cheques to families. Please don’t purchase anything thinking that you can turn in the receipt to HCOS to be reimbursed. You can’t be. L

3.  AMAZON 101
If you have materials that you wish to order from Amazon you can create a “Wishlist”.
IMPORTANT: If you are ordering from a variety of suppliers, ie. “Joe’s Book Barn” because of cheaper or used books, you are then charged shipping by those suppliers. Free shipping only applies to orders directly from Amazon.

4.  LESSONS
I will attach a pdf. of the HCOS form for music/dance/art teachers. They directly invoice the school using this form. HCOS will usually only pay half the year at a time.

1.  PRE-PAID CREDIT CARD
At the end of October you can apply to the HCOS Office for a prepaid credit card. You may use this card to pay for schooling related purchases. Receipts are to be submitted for purchases.

2.  NOT MY MONEY?????
According to the Ministry of Education, all of the money in your child’s resource account belongs to HCOS and all resources purchased belong to HCOS.

Now, before you get too excited HCOS will not come looking to collect any of these resources. HCOS is VERY happy to be able to resource our families. It is our desire to enable successful home education as much as we are able.

Only in a very rare case, such as a family purchasing a large ticket item and then soon after leaving the school, would HCOS come looking for the return of that item.

3.  USING PO NUMBERS
The HCOS website has a list of vendors who will directly take you PO# for purchases.

I hope that all of this makes sense and helps as you look at and order resources.

  1. I don't know why it numbered the points the way that it did. I worked on it for a while but couldn't fix it without a complete rewrite. Sorry

  2. I didn't even notice the funny numbering. Shows how observant I am! Thanks for all the good info.
